For the first time in program history, Lambert’s boys soccer team has lost consecutive games.

Cameron Bean was tripped by a Lambert defender deep inside the box to setup a penalty kick, and he sent the ball into the far right side of the goal with 3:08 left in regulation to give No. 4-ranked Centennial a 1-0 victory over the No. 3-ranked Longhorns on Tuesday at The Horn.

"Once again, I think the better team didn’t win," Lambert head coach Chris Wilson said. "I’m very proud of my guys for putting in a result where we out-produced them. The funny thing is last time we played them we had five shots on goal and scored twice, so it’s a funny game like that.

"Tonight, we had 13 shots to their six and they get a penalty kick to win the game. We got caught in a position where we made a poor choice and we got called for it, but I’m very proud of my boys for what they put in and getting where we are."

The Knights (11-2, 10-1 Region 6-AAAAAA) came out firing in the first minute as Diego Torres took a shot on goal in the box, but Lambert keeper Miles Maynard stopped the ball and cleared it away.

Lambert (10-2, 9-2) tried to score in the 13th minute when Cooper Coughlin crossed the ball to Ryan Elswick in the box, but the header was off target. Jalen Williams tried to break the scoreless drought a few minute later, but his shot was gathered in by keeper Matt Celani as both teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.

The Longhorns had Centennial on its heels for much of the second half; however they couldn’t solve the last line of defense.

Coughlin took a free kick just outside the box in the 49th minute, but his shot went well over the goal. Mitch Fandos tried a shot from 15 yards away in the 55th minute and Trexler Bennett took a long throw-in and found Logan Willis in the box with 19:12 left in regulation, but both shot attempts were off target.

Lambert’s defense came through in the 73rd minute and cleared away a nicely placed corner kick by Centennial’s Sterling Wendt in the middle of the box. The Knights continued to press offensively and drew the penalty kick.

The Longhorns played without forward Bobby Hopper, out with a knee injury, and midfielder Chad McArdle.

"We’re not going to make excuses," Wilson said. "Bobby’s got a little bit of a knee thing. He should be back after spring break."
