The Department of Driver Services center in Cumming was so quiet Tuesday afternoon you could hear the pages of a book being turned.

Normally a beehive of activity, just two people sat among dozens of vacant seats at the center, off Pilgrim Mill Road near Ga. 400.

“We don’t even know what exactly has happened … but the entire statewide system is down,” said Ron Shankle, district manager. “It’s been down all day.”

The computer outage impacted every licensing and testing center in the state Tuesday, which is typically their busiest day, since offices are closed Mondays.

By Wednesday morning, the system was back up and running.

Susan Sports, department spokeswoman, said the issue appeared to be vendor related. MorphoTrust USA, the company that manages the system, worked with the department to resolve the outage.

But with no timetable, many offices like the one in Cumming were left without information on when things would be operational.

Alan Moore, senior vice president for program operations at MorphoTrust, said the problem appeared “to stem from faulty network hardware.”

According to Shankle, the Cumming site worked to accommodate everyone possible, but couldn’t issue any licenses Tuesday.

While customers were turned away due to the outage, Shankle said they were nice about it.

“I haven’t had anyone be irate or hateful at all,” he said. “A lot of people nowadays understand computers run everything. And if a computer goes down, there’s not much you can do.”

Shankle said he would have “all hands on deck” with the system running normally Wednesday.

But visitors may want to bring something to read while waiting. According to the department’s Web site, www.dds.ga.gov, all locations were experiencing “longer than usual wait times” due to Tuesday’s outage.
