KFCB cleanup likely to draw crowd

Volunteers will fan out from Fowler

POSTED: April 15, 2013 12:28 a.m.

Keep Forsyth County Beautiful invites residents to get a little dirty on April 20 in celebration of Earth Day.

The group is holding the Great American Cleanup, which will send hundreds of volunteers out to remove trash and debris from some of the most littered places in the county.

“This is our way of celebrating Earth Day,” said Kevin Smith, the agency’s community outreach specialist. “We’re going to span out this year like we have in years past ... we try to cover the whole county as much as possible.”

The group will meet in the park at 9 a.m. From there, the volunteers will be grouped up and given a location to spend the next two hours cleaning.

Smith has some sites that are repeat offenders for litter, but he’s also kept a list of complaints from residents as a reference for where to send volunteers. The event could cover as many as 20 locations.

The Great American Cleanup is part of a national event organized by Keep America Beautiful.

According to Smith, Keep Forsyth County Beautiful started holding the event on Earth Day last year and noticed a surge in turnout.

“We had 310 last year, which was about 100 more than the year before,” Smith said. “I think at some point we’ll top off, but with our growth, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 400 people this year.”

After the cleanup, volunteers are encouraged to return to the park for free food and fun.
