City agrees to change in parking deck deal

POSTED: April 18, 2013 12:29 a.m.

Cumming City Council on Tuesday night approved a few tweaks to an agreement with Forsyth County for two new parking decks.
Last month, council unanimously voted to let $5.3 million it’s entitled to from the current 1-cent sales tax program go to the county to build the two decks downtown.

The first deck would be by the new courthouse and jail, while the other would go on a lot the city owns near Goodson Drug Company.

In exchange, the county would give Cumming $4 million for the city to use on parks and recreation improvements.

The city sent that proposal to the county for approval by county commissioners last month; however, they decided to make some clarifications to the original agreement, city attorney Dana Miles explained Tuesday.

Miles said he had met with Mayor H. Ford Gravitt and City administrators Gerald Blackburn and Steve Bennett about revising the agreement.

Differences between the two documents, Miles said, are “mostly attempts to clarify what everybody sort of understood, make it clearer what we’re going to do.”

One of those clarifications, he said, includes noting exactly where the deck on the lot near Goodson Drug Company will be located.

“And also make it clearer that the final footprint … will be decided by the county architect, because they’re the ones that are doing the design and build of it,” he said.

County Commission Chairman Pete Amos, who attended Tuesday’s council meeting, said the agreement would also be approved by Forsyth at a work session next week.

“We’re ready to go with it and we appreciate the help and what ya’ll have done to allow us to build the courthouse and jail in the city of Cumming,” he said.
