Basketball: Thompson resigns as Lambert girls coach

POSTED: April 19, 2013 6:21 p.m.

After four seasons at the helm of the Lambert girls basketball team, Seth Thompson has turned in his letter of resignation.

Thompson has been the only head coach for the program since the school opened in 2009. He compiled a 52-55 record and guided Lambert to consecutive state playoff appearances over the last two seasons.

Thompson will now focus on earning a doctorate in either an administrative capacity or curriculum instruction.

"I’ve got some personal goals I’ve set for myself," Thompson said.

"I’m very fortunate and very lucky to coach Lambert. … I needed to step back to pursue some higher degrees, and I’ve been looking to do a doctorate degree for a long time. This kind of gives me the opportunity to do that.

"… Making the playoffs the last two years, I feel like my record is solid. I feel really good about the team, and I’ve been there since the start, so I’m leaving it better than I found it because I started it.

"I talked to the girls on Monday and let them know, and that was a tough thing to do, but I think that overall it’s the right thing for me. Going back to school is tough and it’ll be time-consuming on my part, and I didn’t think I could commit to the time that was needed in order to make playoffs and get past that first round."

Lambert’s 2010-‘11 season was Thompson’s best. His team tallied an 18-11 overall record and went an impressive 12-4 in Region 7-AAAA. Last season’s campaign was much more difficult, as Thompson had just one senior starter, Peyton Card, on the team.

"There’s some very competitive kids in that program," Thompson said. "I think in the next couple of years they’ve got the chance to be pretty special.

"It’s a tough thing because I’ve been coaching now for a while. I love Lambert; I’m a Lambert guy. I’m very loyal to Lambert and I feel like I would be doing a disservice to the girls if I probably hung on because I’ve got a lot going on with school and with my family.

Thompson may not be entirely out of the coaching ring next season. He said he will likely join the boys basketball team as an assistant coach.

"It still gives me the opportunity to coach and it’s not as much of a time commitment," Thompson said. "Coach [Scott] Bracco is obviously a great coach, but it gives me a chance to keep contributing to the success we’ve had at Lambert in some form or capacity, which is important to me."
