Support of firemen appreciated

POSTED: April 28, 2013 8:00 a.m.

My name is Phyllis Talbot and I, along with many family and friends, help put on the Hike for Hyde each year for the past five years, benefiting the Foundation for Children with Atypical HUS (a nonprofit supporting the disease my son has) and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. We have raised over $135,000 over this time for the two organizations.

That’s just a little background on why I’m writing. I really wanted to brag on a few of our local Forsyth County firemen, and tell you just how much they have meant to us.

My son Hyde is now 6, so was only 2 at the first hike, and as most little boys, is obsessed with all things related to trucks, especially fire trucks. Well, each year we call and ask about having a fire truck come and a fireman talk to the kids (we have well over 200 kids per year usually).

For the last four years we’ve had the Forsyth County Fire Department come (one of the men below has been there all four years). Each year they tell us ahead of time that they can’t guarantee how long they will stay, and at most if will be an hour or two depending on calls they get. I totally understand this, by the way. But I have to say that all four years, they have stayed the entire time and been so amazing with all the kids.

It’s one of the highlights of the day and the guys just could not be nicer, hanging out and walking around, explaining to the kids the equipment, etc. I just wanted to let you know how kind these guys have been and generous with their time and talents to help at an event in the community, and how very much it is appreciated by this lifelong Forsyth County resident.

Thanks so much: Fire station 12 (Coal Mountain), Shift C, Joey Smith, Chris Stancel and Jeff Weaver.
