Young artist from Brookwood honored

POSTED: May 4, 2013 4:30 p.m.

A Brookwood Elementary student has taken second place in the state for her entry in the Clean Air Campaign art competition.

Emily Hwang, a fifth-grader, illustrated the benefits of taking the bus to school through her artwork.

Elementary and middle school students were tasked with creating a six-panel comic strip-style story to show the positive effects on Georgia’s air quality of taking the bus, turning off an idling car engine or carpooling.

According to Gretchen Gigley, director of education for the Clean Air Campaign, there were “so many great entries this year, picking winners was a difficult task.”

“It’s very gratifying to see our future leaders are so excited about improving air quality,” she said.

Hwang’s piece, titled “Go Green,” was one nine top-three finishers from among more than 300 entries at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
