Traffic alert: Part of McGinnis Ferry closing

Bridge repairs set for weekend

POSTED: May 2, 2013 12:29 a.m.

A portion of a busy corridor that touches south Forsyth will be closed to through traffic this weekend while the city of Alpharetta repairs a bridge over Big Creek.

The section of McGinnis Ferry Road between McFarland Parkway and Union Hill Road in the Alpharetta city limits is scheduled to be shut down from 7 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

Only access to local businesses inside the affected area will be permitted.

During the closure, east and westbound traffic on McGinnis Ferry will be detoured to Ronald Reagan Boulevard.

McGinnis Ferry serves as the boundary between Forsyth County and Alpharetta, though the city is responsible for the work based on a state policy, officials said.

According to Pete Sewczwicz, Alpharetta’s director of engineering and public works, the closure will allow crews to replace some beams under the bridge.

“The existing beams are not salvageable and need to be replaced,” he said. “Additionally, some of the bolted connections between the various beams on the bridge need to be replaced.”

Originally set for last weekend, the work was delayed due to rain.
