If one word could sum up the year Lambert High School’s drum line has had, it would be “Superfly.”

That also happens to be the name of the line’s competition piece, which earned it global accolades, including a bronze medal at the recent Winter Guard International World Championship in Ohio.

“It’s a big competition because they went up against 62 other groups,” said Tonya Mashburn, drum line director. “That is a big deal. And they were the only high school group from Georgia that medaled this year. We’re very proud of them.”

The recent honor follows the school band being selected to participate in the annual New Year’s Day Parade & Festival in London in 2015.

The drum line also earned the school the right to play host to the Winter Classic Day of Percussion, which welcomed about 15 drum lines from Georgia and Tennessee to the school for a day of workshops, judging clinics and competition.

Mashburn, co-creator of the drum line’s “Superfly” show with band director Scott McCloy, said the students have worked really hard to master the difficult piece.

This year was the line’s first time attending the Winter Guard International World Championship, so Mashburn wasn’t sure what to expect.

“We really didn’t know how we were going to do,” she said. “We thought that the kids were ready for the experience, but we really didn’t know how well we’d do until we got up there.

“We were very pleased to find out they were competing as well as they were. We were very excited. The kids worked really hard and they definitely earned it.”
