Forsyth County high school students are shining through offerings from the Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation.

Five of this year’s 12 scholarship recipients through the EMC’s foundation attend Forsyth high schools, as do both of this year’s Washington Youth Tour participants.

Each of the 12 recipients received $3,500 to attend the college or university of their choice.

The scholarships are made available annually to high schools within Sawnee EMC’s seven-county service area. Applications are also made available online for those members who homeschool their children.

High school seniors are invited to apply, and retired educators score the applications and conduct personal interviews with the finalists.

Over the past eight years, the foundation has awarded nearly $260,000 in scholarships to 78 high school seniors.

Among the 2013 recipients were the following Forsyth students: Nick Fischer, Martin Garcia and Bailey Howard, all from Forsyth Central; Rachel Mooney of North Forsyth; and Adam Harrison-Trent of West Forsyth.

Other recipients included Amanda Martin and Blake McDaniel of Dawson County High School.

In addition, Peyton Ledford from Central and Brenden Hull from South Forsyth were selected as Sawnee’s 2013 Washington Youth Tour delegates.

They will participate in a week-long trip to Washington, D.C., this summer. While there, they will tour the U.S. Capitol and other major monuments and museums.

The selections were based on a written application and personal interviews.

Before heading to Washington, they will meet in Atlanta with other students representing EMCs across the state. Once in Washington, they will join up with some 1,500 students from across the nation.
