Stroke program earns certification

Northside offers free screenings

POSTED: May 11, 2013 12:14 a.m.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth was recently honored for its stroke care program.

After undergoing an on-site evaluation and demonstrating compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care, the hospital was again awarded a two-year advanced certification for primary stroke centers by the Joint Commission.

The commission is the nation’s leading health care accrediting organization.

Skip Putnam, CEO of the Forsyth hospital, said receiving the certification, which the hospital has earned three times, was an honor.

“It celebrates the hard work of our staff and recognizes our commitment to excellence and to providing the best possible care to our patients and our community,” he said in a statement.

The hospital’s stroke program goes beyond caring for those who have had a stroke.

It also includes offerings for those at risk of stroke, including screenings, education and early diagnosis.

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, the hospital will offer stroke screenings in honor of Stroke Awareness Month.

The comprehensive screenings will be administered by health care professionals and will include a risk assessment, blood pressure reading, total cholesterol and glucose tests and a one-on-one consultation with a health care professional.

A limited number of carotid ultrasounds will also be administered, as well as sleep apnea screenings and smoking cessation counseling.

The stroke screenings are free, but anyone interested must make an appointment by calling (404) 845-5555 and pressing “0.”

The hospital’s stroke program also includes an array of treatments and monthly support groups for those who have suffered a stroke.

According to the American Stroke Association, about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year. It is the fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.

On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds.

Northside’s certification as a primary stroke center is a voluntary process. The achievement means the hospital has met critical elements of performance to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for stroke patients.

In addition to the stroke certification, Northside Hospital-Forsyth also earned recognition from the commission for its pneumonia care and hip and knee replacement services.
