Forsyth Reads Together selection announced

Pulitzer Prize-winning author to speak in September

POSTED: May 16, 2013 12:27 a.m.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Bragg will be visiting Forsyth County in September to wrap up the sixth annual community reading program.

Bragg’s “All Over But the Shoutin’” has been selected for this year’s Forsyth Reads Together, a program that unites the community with literature.

His 1998 novel is a “memoir of growing up in rural Alabama and the struggles of his single mother to raise three children on her own,” according to a news release from the Forsyth County Public Library.

Bragg has written several best-selling nonfiction books and worked at several newspapers. In 1996, he received the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing at the New York Times.

Program manager Laura Bradley said the committee chose Bragg as this year’s author because of his acclaimed Southern writing.

“Mr. Bragg is such an engaging speaker,” Bradley said, “and his book follows in the same vein as last year, so we thought it would be a nice choice.”

Last year’s selection, “To Dance with the White Dog” is set in north Georgia, and author Terry Kay hails from Athens.

Bradley said the staff has begun reading this year’s selection and looks forward to Bragg’s visit. She described the book as “very realistic, but at the same time, very entertaining.”

The library has many copies of the book and has ordered more to prepare for the popular annual community event.

Several programs will be offered in the late summer to conclude the reading experience, including the main event.

Bragg will speak and sign books on Sept. 17 at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center.

Forsyth Reads Together is a joint effort of the Forsyth County Public Library, as well as Forsyth County Arts Alliance, Forsyth County Public Library Friends & Advocates and Literacy Forsyth.
