Lady Horns land former Parkview coach

POSTED: May 15, 2013 3:26 p.m.

Lambert may have gotten a steal with its latest coaching hire.

Tony Watkins is leaving Parkview High School, where he compiled a record of 59-2 over two seasons, to replace Seth Thompson as the Lady Longhorns head coach.

Watkins, who has been a varsity head basketball coach for 32 years, has a career record of 592-254.

Watkins, 55, brings with him former South Gwinnett girls head basketball coach Jaime Fisher as his assistant coach. The Forsyth County Board of Education approved the hires of both Watkins and Fisher during its meeting May 9.

“The [Forsyth] county is an up-and-coming place and I’d been looking to get up there,” Watkins said. “It’s the place to be and I’m ready to roll my sleeves up and get to work.

“You’ll have to give Lambert the credit for [hiring] Jaime. We’ve gone against each other a few times and she’s a good coach. I think [Lambert] pulled off something special.”

Watkins graduated from Lakeshore High School before playing basketball at Oglethorpe University for two seasons. He was forced to give up his playing career after suffering several knee injuries.

Watkins said the Lady Longhorns will have two goals next season — get better every day and win a state championship.

“Summer is going to be an evaluation period,” Watkins said. “I really don’t know the personnel, but I don’t predetermine anything.”
