Transportation help offered to patients

Hospital adds new colon health program

POSTED: May 28, 2013 12:26 a.m.

Colon health patients have a new option when it comes to transportation to and from health care appointments and screenings.

Northside Hospital, including its Forsyth location, recently received a grant from the Colon Cancer Alliance, or CCA, through its Undy 5000 5K run/walk series, which is held in 17 cities throughout the country.

The funding allowed the hospital system to create a new Colorectal Cancer Transportation Assistance Program.

Through the program, qualified patients may receive one-way or round-trip transportation within metro Atlanta to colorectal health services.

Among the services for which patients can receive help with transportation are: physician and colonoscopy appointments; colorectal cancer diagnostic testing and treatments; and medication refills.

Services will be provided to patients in need as long as funding remains in place.

Betty McGinty, director of Northside’s Advanced Center for GI Therapeutics, said the hospital system is always looking to find ways to increase cancer screenings and the new program will help in those efforts.

“Colon cancer is one of the top five cancers we diagnose at Northside Hospital,” she said in a statement. “Increasing access to colorectal cancer screening and treatment for our patients is a primary goal of our cancer institute this year.

“We are very appreciative of the Colon Cancer Alliance and the Undy 5000 for supporting our program.”

The funding was provided through CCA’s Community Health Partnership Grant Program, funded by the Undy 5000.

The program provides grants to partners who will help further CCA’s mission of providing hope and support to patients and their families, while saving lives through prevention, research and patient support services.

Since the Undy 5000’s inception in 2008, the 5K series has raised more than $4.3 million to help fund local colon cancer screening efforts and the CCA’s patient support programs.
