Reminder: Memorial Day ceremony Friday

City observance set for 11 a.m.

POSTED: May 23, 2013 7:29 p.m.

Veterans who served in both war and peace times will be recognized Friday during the city of Cumming’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony.

The event is set for 11 a.m. at the city’s Veterans War Memorial, 301 Veterans Memorial Blvd.

A highlight of the annual event is the Avenue of Flags dedication, in which families of deceased veterans unfurl American flags in memory of their loved ones.

Each year new veterans are added to the avenue, which began in 1995.

Eight new honorees will be added this year. They include Wayne Lindsey, a city employee who worked 33 years in various capacities including as Cumming Police chief and director of new development/special projects for the maintenance department.

Today’s ceremony is being held in honor of Lindsey, who passed away suddenly earlier this month.

With today’s additions, the Avenue of Flags will total 201.

The ceremony will also feature music from Forsyth Pipe and Drum and the North Georgia Barbershop Singers, as well as presentations by the Forsyth County Fire Department’s Honor Guard and Sheriff’s Department.

The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will conclude with a release of white doves.
