Book fair Saturday aids mentoring group

The Forsyth County community is invited to support a local mentoring organization through books this weekend.

Mentor Me North Georgia will be the beneficiary of a book fair event, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Noble in the Collection at Forsyth.

Sylvia Cardona, the organization’s executive director, expressed gratitude to Barnes & Noble for the venue and the “opportunity to meet more people and share with them how easy it is to become a mentor.

Mentor Me North Georgia is a nonprofit that works to match caring adult mentors to children ages 6 to 17.

In addition to one-on-one mentoring, the organization also offers several in-school and after-school programs to help local students.

Mentor Me will also provide summer reading camps for children this July.

Karen Carroll, program manager, said visitors to Saturday’s book fair can help the summer camps by buying books on the program’s reading list.

“We’ll have those lists available at the book fair so people can just pick up a copy or two while they’re at the fair,” she said.

The event will also offer a number of family-friendly activities. Among them: Tae kwon do demonstrations; face painting; and visits from children’s book characters.

In addition, Christine Roberts, a mentor with the program and inspirational speaker, will sign copies of her book “Inspirational Mind Food.”

Anyone who can’t make it Saturday but would like to support Mentor Me can do so by going to www.bn.com/bookfairs any time between Thursday and June 5 and entering book fair ID 11099280 at checkout.

They also can have a percentage of in-store purchases go to the organization during the same time frame.

Cardona hopes many will come out Saturday.

“You can shop for yourself, purchase a book to donate to our summer reading camp or just enjoy a cup of coffee,” she said in a statement.

“We invited our neighbors from throughout Forsyth County to join us for the book fair, not only to have fun but to support Forsyth kids that need mentors and friends.”
