Grant going toward breast cancer services

POSTED: June 1, 2013 4:30 p.m.

Northside Hospital recently received substantial grant funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Greater Atlanta.

The funding will be used to help women in financial need pay for mammograms and other breast diagnostic procedures through the hospital system’s Breast Care Program.

Patti Owen, director of oncology services at Northside, said she and other staff members were grateful to Komen Atlanta for its ongoing support of the program.

“[Through] support from groups like Komen Atlanta, Northside is able to increase the early detection of breast cancer by educating and screening more women,” she said in a statement.

According to information from the hospital, more cases of breast cancer are treated at Northside than any other community hospital in the Southeast.

The hospital system, including the Forsyth location, offers a complete range of services for patients including education, genetic counseling, imaging, radiation oncology, chemotherapy, surgery, support and rehabilitation.

Komen Atlanta’s grant program funds community programs that provide needed breast cancer services to women who are medically underserved and uninsured.

Of the nearly $160,000 given to Northside in 2013, almost $143,000 will go toward helping qualified applicants receive mammograms and other diagnostic services.

The remaining some $17,000 in grant funds will help Northside provide screening mammograms in partnership with Komen Atlanta’s Worship in Pink Program, which encourages churches, mosques and synagogues to spread the message of screening.

To be eligible for the free screening services at Northside, applicants must qualify for financial assistance and live in one of the following counties: Forsyth, Cherokee, Fulton and Gwinnett, among others.

In addition, women must be at least 35, meet income level requirements, have no health insurance and provide a written order from her physician.
