Successful book fair raises funds

Mentoring organization benefits from event

A local mentoring organization recently completed a successful book fair event.

Mentor Me North Georgia held the event in conjunction with Barnes & Noble at The Collection in south Forsyth on June 1.

While the event served as a fundraiser, with patrons at the bookstore donating a percentage of their sales in support, it also served as a way to educate the community, said executive director Sylvia Cardona.

“The book fair was a unique opportunity for our organization,” Cardona said in a statement. “Most importantly, it was another way for our community to learn about Mentor Me and how mentoring can make such a difference in the life of a child.”

Customers also could opt to purchase books for the program’s summer reading camps for children. They also took part in several activities for families, such as face painting, a tae kwon do demonstration and making balloon animals.

Christine Roberts, a Mentor Me North Georgia mentor, signed copies of her book, “Inspirational Mind Food.”

Customers could also donate a portion of in-store and online purchases for a week after the book fair.

Mentor Me matches adult volunteers with children ages 6 to 17 who need and want a mentor. Men are matched with boys and women are matched with girls.

The organization also provides several in-school and after-school tutoring programs and the summer reading camps.

Cardona said she’s always glad to have opportunities such as the book fair to share the mission of the organization.

“The book fair was fun, but ultimately it supports Forsyth kids who need mentors and friends,” she said. “We are grateful to Barnes & Noble, and we thank everyone who participated.”
