Forsyth County senior citizens came together with area heath care providers on Tuesday during the Healthy Aging and Fitness Fair.

The second annual event, which was organized by the county’s senior services department, featured about a dozen providers of health and wellness services.

Michael Bohn, senior services director, said about 65 seniors signed up to attend the gathering, which was held at Sexton Hall in south Forsyth.

“We love the chatter, we love the crowds, we love seeing people sitting and talking,” he said.

Among the offerings Tuesday were blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings, as well as massage and reflexology.

Other vendors shared information about healthy eating and activities.

Some seniors had the chance to try out tai chi and yoga, two of the fitness classes offered through senior services on a regular basis.

Janet Kindschuh with Physiotherapy Associates said the fair was good for her business.

“We just want to educate the community on what our services are,” she said. “We want to get the word out that we’re here and we offer preventative services.”

Brian Blasick, a senior services specialist and wellness coordinator, said he was pleased with the event.

“We’ve gotten good comments and we have lines for some of the screenings, which is a good thing,” Blasick said.

He noted that the fair is important because it provides free services to the seniors, as well as a chance for them to meet health providers.

“Some people might say, ‘Hey, I’m not happy with my physical therapist. Here’s a physical therapist I can relate to,’” he said, noting the social aspects of such opportunities are also important.

“It’s a chance to get out and meet other seniors and to see what’s available in the area.”
