Fire chars hay barn

Blaze burned for nearly 10 hours

POSTED: June 26, 2013 12:25 a.m.

A barn filled with hay burned down Sunday morning in Forsyth County.

Firefighters arrived about 2:30 a.m. to find the small barn engulfed in flames, said Division Chief Jason Shivers.

No one was inside the structure, which stored a pickup truck and several round bales of hay, off Majors Road near Hwy. 9.

The truck was salvaged, but the hay and barn continued to burn for nearly 10 hours, according to Shivers.

The building was “a total loss,” Shivers said, but the barn could have smoldered for days due to the volume of hay inside.

He thanked the county roads and bridges department for bringing grading equipment that could tear apart the hay and portions of the barn to stop the burning.

“It could have continued to smoke and been a very unpleasant odor,” he said.

Considered a commercial fire, the barn is owned by the Reid Family Partnership, according to county tax records.

It’s not known what caused the blaze to start. Shivers noted the incident remains under investigation.
