Hospital honored for cardiac care

POSTED: June 29, 2013 4:30 p.m.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth has received recognition for its treatment of heart attack patients.

The local hospital, along with Northside’s Sandy Springs and Canton campuses, was recently honored by the American Heart Association through its Mission: Lifeline program.

The hospital was recognized with the Receiving Center Quality Achievement award in honor of its “commitment and success in implementing exceptional standards of care for heart attack patients,” according to information from Northside.

Liz Sobczyk, director of cardiovascular services, said she and her staff members were pleased to receive the award.

“Northside Hospital is committed to improving the standards of care and patient outcomes of our heart attack patients,” she said in a statement. “We are pleased that our efforts are being recognized, and I am very proud of our team.”

The Mission: Lifeline program helps hospitals and emergency medical services develop systems of care that follow proven clinical treatment guidelines. Those guidelines ensure heart attack patients get the care they need as quickly as possible.

According to information from the American Heart Association, nearly 300,000 people each year in the United States have the most severe form of heart attack.

Known as a STEMI heart attack, it occurs when a blood clot completely blocks an artery to the heart.

To prevent death, it’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by nonsurgical intervention, coronary bypass surgery or clot-busting medication.

As a STEMI-receiving hospital, each Northside location has the expertise, equipment, facilities and other resources to ensure patients receive the most appropriate treatment.

A team of board-certified cardiologists, cardiac-trained nurses and technologists have expertise in diagnosing and treating disorders like coronary artery blockages, congenital heart defects and heart failure.

In addition to the Mission: Lifeline recognition, each hospital is also fully accredited as a chest pain center from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.

The Forsyth and Sandy Springs campuses are also designated UnitedHealth Premium specialty centers in recognition of quality cardiac care.
