A sex offender who failed to register in Forsyth County has been arrested in West Virginia by the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office had been working since March to locate Curtis Joe Motes, 27, after he did not register annually as required.

Motes was found Thursday after law enforcement checked places his friends and family members lived, said Doug Rainwater, sheriff’s office spokesman.

The last known address for Motes, who was convicted of child molestation in 2006 in Hall County, was 5774 Adrian Lane, off Crystal Cove Trail in northeastern Forsyth.

According to Georgia law, any person convicted of a criminal sex offense in any state or territory must register once a year with local law enforcement, providing accurate information about where they work and live. They must also notify authorities if they move.

In a statement, Sheriff Duane Piper hailed the capture of Motes, crediting the “outstanding and collaborative efforts between the Forsyth County deputies and the U.S. Marshals Service.”

“We will continue to take any necessary actions to ensure the safety and security of our community,” Piper said.
