District earns tech accolades

POSTED: July 13, 2013 4:30 p.m.

The Forsyth County school system has spent its summer collecting various awards and honors for its use of technology.

The system’s assistive technology team received the Tools for Life Excellence in Assistive Technology Team Award for outstanding services.

The team includes Polly Benson, Patricia Fairley, Michelle Goffe, Barbara Leonard, Jennifer Ro, Chris Swaim and Amy Thomsen.

The recognition at the local or statewide level honors those who promote or help develop effective technology integration in the classroom, school, system, workplace or community.

In a statement, Tools for Life director Carolyn Phillips described the local team as “a leader in Georgia and a pioneer nationally in their development and implementation of innovative and effective assistive technology services that relate directly to student achievement.”

In addition to the system’s award, Ann Kohler from South Forsyth High School earned the Innovator of the Year Award from the organization for outstanding design of an inclusive classroom.

“Ann exemplifies excellence in inclusion of all students through her effective implementation of assistive technology, universal design for learning principles and the Bring Your Own Technology model in her classroom,” Phillips said.

The district also was named as a 2013 Learning Impact Silver Award winner.

The IMS Global Learning Consortium announced the results recently for the system’s partnership with Safari Montage to improve access, affordability and quality technology for students.

The award recognizes the use of use of technology in context, nominating not just the technology but also results achieved by an institution to improve learning.
