Grant going to juvenile justice reporting center

POSTED: July 25, 2013 12:25 a.m.

Forsyth County has accepted a grant from the Georgia Governor’s Office for Children and Families for about $80,000.

The funding will go toward a day and evening reporting center for youths in the juvenile justice system.

The grant assists with a requirement of juvenile justice reform to provide alternatives to detention centers.

The court proposed using a house on Veterans Memorial Boulevard that is currently the home of Supporting Adoption and Foster Families Together, or SAFFT, which is relocating.

The county commission voted 4-0 to accept the grant, with Commissioner Todd Levent absent.

Also during their work session Tuesday, county commissioners:

* Decided to move forward with proposed changes to the county’s fire prevention ordinance by setting public hearings.

The modifications primarily update the local code to reflect state law, as well as setting a cost recovery mechanism for the county in cases of negligence or violation of the ordinance, among other changes.

* Set a public hearing for Aug. 1 on the impact fee program annual update, which will be sent to the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission for review.

The report shows the county has about $5.3 million in unallocated impact fee funds. The vote was 4-0, with Levent absent.

* Gave approval to apply for a state Tourism Product Development Grant of up to $15,000, which could assist in funding a feasibility study to determine uses for the former concert venue at Lanierland, a future county park.

* Awarded management of the tennis facility at Fowler Park to Annacone Tennis Management. The firm will operate the courts and give a portion of the profits to the county in return.

* Appointed Vicky Rennick as the Humane Society representative on the Animal Control Board. The three-member panel reviews appeals of dogs or other animals classified as dangerous.

Note: All votes were 5-0 unless otherwise noted.
