School safety fair Saturday morning

Popular event at Lanier Tech

POSTED: July 26, 2013 12:28 a.m.

Last year’s SOAR Back to School Safety Fair was such a success, the Forsyth County school system is bringing it back.

The event, set for Saturday at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center, will show children everything from how to properly board a school bus to how to behave on it.

There will be five stations in the training exhibit. But the event reaches beyond school bus safety, said Garry Puetz, the system’s transportation director.

“It’s everything Forsyth County does to keep kids safe and keep the public safe,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to see everything Forsyth County does.

“We’ll have the paramedics out there, the sheriff’s office, fire department, Smokey the Bear will be there … we have our drivers teaching school bus safety and there’s a lot of enthusiasm.”

Elvis the Safety Owl and his SOAR Patrol (short for Safe, Orderly and Respectful) will be at the fair, as will the Chick-fil-A safety cow and the Good NeighBear from State Farm Insurance.

Puetz said even those who attended last year’s event can benefit from returning because “you really can’t do it all in one trip.”

“And it’s fun for the kids. Our stations are all a lot of fun,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it and we’re looking forward to seeing the kids and their parents.”
