In 2009, Jim and Alison Stoddart were just trying to be creative.

“We were thinking we’d do something unique,” Jim Stoddart said. “We were just a little company. We started small and grew over time.”

Flash forward four years and the Forsyth County couple were among the few artists at the National Train Show last weekend in the Cobb Galleria Centre.

Surrounded by high-tech model locomotives, hopper cars, boxcars, train tracks and detailed town scenes, the Stoddarts’ artwork stood out.

Each piece includes hundreds of parts, mounted on a laser-cut fiber board designed to look like railroad logos and locomotives.

“It’s a labor of love,” Jim Stoddart said.

From his first sale, word-of-mouth has been key.

“Every time we would do one, people would ask us to do another one,” he said. “It just kept expanding from there.”

Though he’s attended several train gatherings, this was his first year at the National Train Show.

“We go wherever people who like trains come together,” he said.
