Two local Scouts among first to earn new badge

POSTED: August 17, 2013 4:30 p.m.

Two Forsyth County boys are among the first to earn the Boy Scout’s new programming merit badge.

Corey Philbrook and Patrick Clapp from Boy Scout Troop 245 in Cumming were two of the first 50 Scouts to receive the badge during the National Scout Jamboree.

"I'm very interested in technology,” Philbrook said. “When I heard that the Boy Scouts were offering this, I jumped at the chance.

The honor was still sinking in for Clapp, who said he “can’t believe I’m [among the first Scouts] in the world to receive this badge.”

Rick Folea, a senior technical marketer with Automation Direct, was the team leader of the group that developed the merit badge for the Scouts.

Others on the team were professionals from around the country and included representatives from MIT, Lockheed Martin and Chrysler.

"Programming is everywhere in our lives these days and since the Boy Scouts are all about preparing youth for life, the two were a perfect match," Folea said.

“We understand the importance of getting young minds excited about programming and factory automation … and maybe someday making a career out of it."
