South DECA program secures certification

POSTED: August 16, 2013 12:26 a.m.

South Forsyth’s marketing/DECA program has again earned accolades as an industry-certified offering.

According to Nancy Ruff, DECA adviser, the certification is “given to exceptional programs who have undergone reviews by leaders from business and industry as a stamp of excellence.”

Ruff, along with South’s other marketing instructors, Debra Moore and Katie Pniewski, coached the students toward the certification.

It’s the third time the school’s program has earned the honor, which involves a lengthy process, as well as re-certification every five years.

South Principal Jeff Cheney said he was “pleased that our students will continue to benefit from an instructional program that is recognized as one of the best in the state and nation.”

Ruff said the students passed 11 industry standards, including project-based instruction, competitive events and use of technology. There were also interviews with instructors and students and a review of documentation showing criteria had been met.

“Several students presented the results of projects conducted with local businesses, including advertising campaigns and business plans,” Ruff said. “This year-long process was culminated by an on-site evaluation which was held in March.”

The schools DECA chapter, which has remained the largest in the world for the past five years, has nearly 1,040 members. It also is the only one in the county to have earned the title of industry-certified marketing program, according to Ruff.

“Industry certification signifies that the students from this school have employable skills that are aligned to national standards, thus enabling them to be a positive impact to the development of a highly-skilled work force,” she said.
