Timeline nears for redistricting

POSTED: August 17, 2013 12:08 a.m.

School system officials will huddle this week with school principals to review the proposed redistricting timeline that the Forsyth County Board of Education approved Thursday.

The meetings are the first of many steps in the redistricting process, which will relieve crowding at several schools for the 2014-15 year.

On Sept. 12, staff will present the school board with the first draft of proposed redistricting lines. The next day, that will be posted on the school system’s Web site for public comment through Sept. 27.

Staff will review feedback and create a second draft for the board at its Oct. 10 meeting, when more changes could occur.

A second round of public comment will follow the board’s Oct. 17 approval of a third draft, on which the public can weigh in from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1.

Two public forums have been proposed — Oct. 22 for elementary schools and Oct. 24 for secondary. The board is slated to approve the final redistricting plan Nov. 21.

At the elementary school level, redistricting will ease crowding at Daves Creek, Midway, Settles Bridge, Shiloh Point and Whitlow. The impact will be felt at many schools that will be picking up the overflow.

Middle school redistricting is aimed at Otwell, Piney Grove and Riverwatch, while impacting Lakeside, Little Mill and South Forsyth.

The system’s out-of-district request process opens Nov. 25.
