Workshop to address harassment prevention

Organized by chamber’s human resource council

POSTED: August 26, 2013 12:27 a.m.

The Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce will present information next week on how businesses can better handle harassment issues.

Through the Human Resource Council, a committee of the chamber that formed in the spring, those in human resources or other management roles can learn legally sound ways to deal with harassment issues in the workplace during the session.

The workshop is set for 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Keller Williams Realty Community Partners, 540 Lake Center Pkwy., Suite 201.

Jason Mock, director of the chamber’s Small Business Services Center, said this is one of several educational programs the HR Council will present throughout the year.

The most recent, which dealt with discipline and termination issues, was held in May.

“One of the things we wanted to do with the HR workshops is to cover as many topics as possible and this was one of those topics that the HR providers have to deal with periodically throughout their careers,” Mock said.

“So we wanted to make sure they had the tools they needed to handle harassment and anything that came up along those lines.”

Tracy Moon, attorney with the Atlanta office of Fisher & Phillips LLP, and Philip Monaghan, director of the Talent Strategy Corporate Center of the American Cancer Society, will lead the workshop.

While designed for those who specialize in human resources, Mock said the meeting is open to anyone who feels the information could be beneficial.

“We know that a lot of our businesses are small businesses that may not have a … HR director,” Mock said. “They may have a manager of ‘X’ program and part of that program is HR. So if you or someone else in that business handles the HR aspects of the company, we would love for them to be there even if their title’s not HR director.”

Cost to attend the program is $25 for chamber members and $30 for non-members. Anyone planning to attend should pre-register on the chambers’ website, www.cummingforsythchamber.org, or call the office at (770) 887-6461.

Mock hopes for a good turnout.

“We feel like this is a topic that people are dealing with and something they would love to hear more about to learn some of the steps they need to go through to protect themselves, as well as their businesses and employees,” he said.
