The Adult Learning Center of Lanier Technical College honored GED graduates on Thursday night by recognizing honor students and awarding scholarships.

Carolyn Mixon, president of the South Forsyth Rotary Club, presented the Andy Miller Scholarships.

The program was established some 10 years ago in memory of Miller, a special Rotarian who worked to help local youth and adults.

The top scholarship of $2,500 was awarded to Alexandria Moore.

Scholarships for $750 each went to Angelica Cruz and April Terry, while Cassandra Marks, Teresa Reyes and Bakari Yabuku received $100 scholarships.

Marielos Bond presented the Joseph A. Verdol award of $300 to Lea Brooks. It honors Verdol, a chemical engineer and Cornel graduate, who was an advocate of the adult education program.

Maria Wilson was recognized for recently becoming a U.S. citizen.

This reception and buffet at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center was provided by the Rotary Club.

Also honored Thursday were: Alexsia Cruz; Tyler Jones; Christopher McKenzie; Begzada Osmanbasic; Ristina Retama and Joseph Smith.

The GED graduation is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Free Chapel in Gainesville. This ceremony will include the graduates from Forsyth, Hall, Dawson, Barrow, Banks, and Jackson counties.

The adult learning center has classes to help people in all levels to improve their skills and prepare for the GED exam.

The current GED test is being given through November.  On Jan. 1, a new version of the test will debut. Anyone who needs to pass the test is encouraged to contact the college as soon as possible.
