Reading program gears up for author

Library offerings begin this week

POSTED: September 2, 2013 12:28 a.m.

The opening events for Forsyth Reads Together start this week, leading up to the main attraction on Sept. 17: Rick Bragg.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author will speak later this month to conclude the sixth annual community reading program.

Bragg’s memoir “All Over but the Shoutin’” was announced in May as the title for this year’s Forsyth Reads Together.

Events at the Forsyth County Public Library will begin Wednesday at the new Post Road branch with a showing of the documentary “Alabama’s Rick Bragg: Out of the Dirt.”

The library will also hold two workshop sessions on writing a memoir, presented by a University of North Georgia professor, and two book discussions over the next two weeks.

The movie showings and book discussions do not require advance registration, but people must sign up for the memoir workshop, which is limited to 25 participants at each branch.

Bragg will speak and sign books on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center.

More than 200 people have already registered for the culminating event, said Steve Kight, the library’s assistant director of public services.

Kight said many people have expressed excitement about this year’s selection, and Bragg’s books have been checked out many times from the library.

“I really enjoyed his book,” Kight said. “It’s very well-written, and I’m really looking forward to hearing him speak in person.”

Forsyth Reads Together is a joint effort of the Forsyth County Public Library, as well as Forsyth County Arts Alliance, Forsyth County Public Library Friends & Advocates and Literacy Forsyth.
