Reception set for annual room makeover

Widow with 3 kids this year’s recipient

POSTED: September 9, 2013 12:25 a.m.

A Cumming interior design business has chosen the recipient of an annual room makeover and will celebrate the selection during an event next week.

Allison Havill Todd Interiors’ fifth annual reception is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 at the RBM-North Mercedes-Benz showroom, 345 McFarland Pkwy.

The reception is a fundraiser for the room makeover project, which is awarded each year through Todd’s Designing Dreams nonprofit foundation to an individual, family or nonprofit in need.

Past recipients have included Jesse’s House and the Bald Ridge Boys’ Lodge. Individuals who received the makeover included a widow who runs a dog rescue organization and a family with a young daughter who had numerous medical problems.

This year’s recipient is Terri Wylie, an Alpharetta mother of three and a recent widow. Wylie also suffers from multiple sclerosis, which has left her completely bedridden at various times in the past.

“We are looking forward to providing her with a beautiful new master bedroom and bathroom where she can find somewhere that is comfortable and soothing to her because her life has definitely been turned upside down,” Todd said.

The room makeover, which is valued at up to $20,000, will be completed sometime in November.

Each year, the project receives support from various local businesses who donate supplies and services, and all proceeds from the reception go toward the project costs.

“We don’t have any administrative costs, so everything that is raised will go there,” Todd said.

Advanced tickets to the reception are $10 each if purchased before Monday or they can be bought at the door for $15.

“It’s a fabulous night in a beautiful showroom,” Todd said. “I think the folks at RBM are so gracious to open [it] for this fundraiser.

“We’ll also have the cooking team from Viking [Appliances] on hand providing great, heavy hors d’oeuvres … and a cash bar.”

There will also be a silent auction with “really a wide range” of items, Todd said.

“There’s jewelry, spa treatments, Braves tickets, golf packages, a three-night stay at a beach condo, dozens of gift certificates from local businesses,” she said. “There are items from $10 and up.”

Todd said she’s looking forward to beginning the makeover.

“[Wylie’s] been handed a deck that nobody should have to be dealt,” Todd said. “This lady is such a lovely, nice, kind, special lady and she’s so deserving of this that it really makes me feel so good about being able to do this for her.”

Todd added that she’s hoping for a great turnout to the reception event since those taking part can really see the impact of their support.

“To me, what I think is so special about [Designing Dreams] is it’s not like writing a check to some charity that you don’t really know what happens to the money,” she said. “With this, people are really able to see … how they were able to touch somebody’s life first hand.”
