Volunteers wanted for chamber golf tourney

Event sells out in record time

POSTED: September 16, 2013 12:28 a.m.

An annual golf tournament sold out in record time this year, but volunteers are still needed.

Laura Stewart, director of events for the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, said this is first time that the organization’s tournament, now in its 26thyear, sold out well before the day of play.

“This year we sold a lot more foursome teams, which I think helped to drive the numbers up more quickly since they were coming four at a time versus just one at a time or two at a time,” she said.

The tournament begins with registration at 9 a.m. Sept. 23 at Windermere Golf Club in south Forsyth and continues with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

While the event can’t take on more golfers, Stewart said people can help out as a volunteer.

“I am always looking for volunteer help, especially for an event as large as the golf tournament that spans so much surface area,” Stewart said. “It’s hard for us [chamber staff members] to be able to cover it all.”

According to Stewart, volunteers are needed to help out with tasks such as registering players when they arrive, traversing the course to make sure golfers are taken care of throughout play and administering some of the day’s contests.

“We have a hole-in-one contest, as well as a putting contest,” she said. “For both of those, I need volunteers basically so we’re not just going off the honor system, so that we can have people administering and witnessing those plays.”

In addition, there will be longest drive and closest to the pin contests.

All of the contest winners, as well as those from the tournament will be honored during a cookout reception in the evening. Lunch will also be provided.

Volunteers can help out with those portions of the day as well.

Weather is an important factor, and Stewart said she hopes this year’s forecast will mirror that of the 2012 tournament.

“Last year, we had wonderful weather on our day and we’ve essentially picked the same day of the year, the same Monday in September,” she said. “So we’re hoping it’s like a sweet spot and we get great weather again.”

Stewart said having the tournament sell out so quickly is a good problem to have.

“We’re happy that our members want to be involved in this event and see it as valuable because it certainly is a valuable networking opportunity,” she said.

“Obviously, once play gets under way, that’s the focus since it is a friendly competition and a lot of the golfers take it seriously, as they should. But we, more than anything, want it to be a networking event for our members and the community so we welcome to stop by that morning or to serve as volunteers.”
