A Forsyth County ambulance nearly overturned after being forced off the road by another driver Monday morning on Canton Highway, authorities said.

According to Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers, the ambulance was responding to a medical call from Station 13 about 8 a.m. when the wreck happened.

Shivers said the ambulance was traveling west on Canton Highway with lights and siren on when a driver, who apparently didn’t see it, turned left directly into the path of the ambulance as it was attempting to pass on the left.

The ambulance driver swerved and steered toward a nearby driveway, but slid past it into a ditch alongside the road.

Neither of the two crew members in the ambulance was injured, nor was the other driver, who the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office identified as a 72-year-old Cumming man.

The man has been charged with failure to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office report of the incident stated that the man “noticed vehicles traveling eastbound had stopped, but thought they were stopping to allow him to turn left and did not hear or see the emergency vehicles behind him.”

The vehicle struck the rear passenger side bumper of the ambulance, according to the report.

Shivers said a fire engine that is equipped and staffed for medical calls was on the scene where the ambulance was heading when the crash happened. It did not appear that the delay affected the other patient.
