A Forsyth county school received top honors from the U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday.

Daves Creek Elementary was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School for its overall academic excellence.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan named 286 schools to the list this year, including nine in Georgia.

Daves Creek was the only Forsyth County school to receive the title this year, joining past three-time winner Big Creek Elementary and two-time winner Otwell Middle.

Daves Creek, located on Melody Mizer Lane in east Forsyth, welcomed its first students in 1997 and boasts an enrollment of more than 1,200.

Eric Ashton, principal, said in a statement that it was an “honor and privilege to be recognized.”

“It validates all the hard work and effort that our students, teachers, staff and parents have put in over the years,” he said.

The national department will honor 236 public and 50 private schools at a ceremony in November in Washington, D.C.

In its 31-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this award on nearly 7,500 schools.

The award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at high levels or where significant improvements are being made in students’ levels of achievement.

Daves Creek received the award in the “exemplary high performing” category, which is based on student performance on state assessments.

“Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers,” Duncan said in a statement.

“National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.”
