Red Cross seeks new volunteers

Meeting set for Tuesday

POSTED: September 30, 2013 12:27 a.m.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for new volunteers from Forsyth and surrounding counties.

“By volunteering with the local Red Cross, individuals have a wonderful opportunity to help their neighbors in times of need,” said Sarah Egan, emergency services program manager.

The Northeast Georgia chapter will hold an informational meeting for anyone interested in learning more about how to become a trained disaster volunteer.

That meeting is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Forsyth County Red Cross office, 133 Samaritan Drive.

The Red Cross trains volunteers to work with residents on an individual basis after disasters such as tornados, floods and house fires.

Egan said fires are the primary area of need in Forsyth, with volunteers having handled about six just within the last few months.

In total, she said, the Northeast Georgia chapter typically responds to about 150 incidents each year across several counties.

To help better meet needs, Egan said the chapter is “currently restructuring its entire disaster response program.”

“That’s so disaster volunteers in each county are now part of a larger team that is used across county lines,” she said.

“We have trained volunteers to work one on one with residents so that immediate emergency needs are met. We also train volunteers in a variety of other roles, including mapping and classifying damage, feeding and sheltering displaced residents and providing mental health support.”
