Tax break on efficient home items this weekend

POSTED: October 4, 2013 12:23 a.m.

Efficient appliances and construction materials will be sold tax-free this weekend in Georgia.

Today through Sunday, items labeled Energy Star and WaterSense will be exempt if they are $1,500 or less.

Items that may qualify include: air conditioners, ceiling fans, clothes washers, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, doors, fluorescent light bulbs, refrigerators, windows, bathroom sink faucets and faucet accessories, toilets, urinals, showerheads and irrigation controllers.

The exemption does not include items that are bought for trade, business or resale.

WaterSense is a partnership program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The products help conserve water, but they also lower water bills, said Jon Heard, director of the Cumming Utilities Department.

“Individuals can realize savings on their water bill by ensuring that their household’s plumbing fixtures, as well as their washing machines, dishwashers and other items that use water are in compliance with the EPA WaterSense standards,” he said.

To qualify under the WaterSense program, a toilet must use 1.28 gallons per flush.

There also are standards for other appliances that qualify for the tax holiday, but toilets have an extra incentive through the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. A rebate will be given to residents who replace an old toilet with a WaterSense toilet.

For Cumming water customers, that rebate is $100 per toilet and is applied as a credit on a water bill.

Heard said most toilets installed in newer homes are low-flow, but homes built before the early 1990s may not be. It’s worth checking he said.
