Library offering two financial workshops

First is Tuesday at Post Road branch

POSTED: October 5, 2013 12:16 a.m.

The Forsyth County Public Library System is offering two workshops to help residents prepare for their financial futures.

As part of Financial Planning Week, the library has joined with Chris D. Hardy, founder and CEO of Paramount Investment Advisors, to offer the free sessions.

The first, called “Five Wishes,” will be offered at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Post Road library branch.

Created by the nonprofit organization, Aging with Dignity, “Five Wishes” is a national advance directive that provides a way to provide for how one is treated after becoming ill.

Every participant will leave with a valid living will and durable power of attorney for health care.

The second workshop, focusing on Social Security, will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Cumming library branch.

According to information from the library, there are more than 500 ways in which a married couple can claim Social Security benefits and the difference between the right and wrong way can be as much as $100,000.

Participants in this workshop will discover the best way to make their claims with the federal program.

Laura Bradley, program manager for the library system, said the workshops have been offered before during the library’s spring Money Smart Week.

That week provides a wide range of financial workshops and money management classes for patrons of all ages.

“[These two workshops] were a huge draw so we thought that we would offer them again this fall because they were so popular,” Bradley said.

“There was such a large turnout for them then that we thought additional patrons might like to take part in them now.”

Anyone interested in attending either of the programs is asked to register in advance by going to the library’s website, www.forsythpl.org, or calling (770) 781-9840.

Bradley said the planning workshops are likely the first of many additional financial programs that will be offered throughout the county’s library system.
