Run for Shelter race on Sunday

Benefits facilities for boys and girls

POSTED: October 5, 2013 12:15 a.m.

No the sky won’t be falling, but Forsyth County residents are encouraged to run for shelter this weekend.

Leaders of the Bald Ridge Lodge and Jesse’s House, emergency shelters for boys and girls, respectively, in the care of the Department of Family and Children Services, have organized a 5K and one-mile fun run event as a fundraiser for both homes.

The Run for Shelter race is set for 8 a.m. Sunday at Fowler Park. Cost to participate is $30 for the 5K and $15 for the fun run, with all proceeds being divided among the two homes.

Heidi Snarey, executive director of the boys’ lodge, said it has been a great experience working with Jesse’s House representatives on the fundraiser.

“We’re together because we both have the common goal of bettering the lives of kids,” she said. “They serve the girls in Forsyth County and we serve the boys in Forsyth County, so it’s really kind of a great common thing to raise awareness that there are kids in foster care here in this county.”

Snarey said packet pick-up for the run will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at Academy Sports by The Collection outdoor mall on Peachtree Parkway.

“Anyone interested can come there Saturday to sign up, or a little before the run start on Sunday,” she said.

There’s also a little time left for runners to register at www.active.com. Online registration closes at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Snarey said a run was an appropriate fundraiser for both groups.

“Health and wellness for kids is so important to both of our organizations,” she said.

She added that event will be “very family-friendly” and she’s hoping for a great turnout.

“If people want to come and walk the fun mile with their kids or do the 5K, they can do whichever they prefer,” she said. “Right now, we have about 100 runners and we would love to have at least 150. The more, the merrier.”
