Membership fees official at rec centers

Measure kicks in next month

POSTED: October 5, 2013 12:18 a.m.

Beginning Nov. 1, Forsyth County’s recreation centers will become members-only clubs.

The county commission voted 4-0 on Thursday, with Brian Tam absent, to require annual memberships to use the centers.

Parks and Recreation Department Director Jerry Kinsey told the commission during its meeting Thursday that a membership, which includes an ID badge, would let staff keep tabs on who’s using the facilities.

“We thought this would be a better process for security in the rec centers,” he said. “Incidents have happened over the past year at three recreation centers and we just think [it would provide] a safer environment.”

The vote followed a public hearing, during which no residents spoke for or against the proposal.

County residents age 55 and older won’t have to pay the annual membership of $10 for the first year and $5 each additional year that younger residents do.

Non-residents must pay $120 a year. The cost for a visitor, or to replace a lost badge, is $5.

Money from the memberships would go toward the $52,000 cost to install security cameras for monitoring the popular centers. Kinsey said his department could handle the changes without having to hire additional staff.

Commission Chairman Pete Amos said the changes “should make our centers more family safe.”
