Softball: Central familiar with spoiler role

POSTED: October 4, 2013 10:39 p.m.

Winners of six of their last eight games, the Lady Bulldogs look to carry that momentum into the Region 7-AAAAA softball tournament on Monday.

Favorite: Pope has won 11 consecutive games and has allowed opponents to score more than one run only four times during the span. The Lady Greyhounds won the region last season and look poised to do it again.

Contender: Creekview is tied for second in the region in runs scored (149) and runs allowed (76). The Lady Grizzlies had a stronghold on the region, but slipped near the end of September, losing three of their last four games.

Darkhorse: Forsyth Central knows all about being the darkhorse. The Lady Bulldogs entered last year’s tournament with only three wins in their last nine games, but found their stroke and upset two teams en route to a playoff berth. Central has won six of its last eight games and is on the upswing.

Outlook: Pope is the team to beat, but five teams could potentially win the tournament. Region 7-AAAAA is deep this season and may have a team make a run in the state playoffs.
