Two get probation in 2011 theft spree

POSTED: October 9, 2013 12:28 a.m.

Two Forsyth County men will spend seven years on probation for a series of thefts from vehicles they committed as teenagers.

Cody Blake Austin, 19, and Joshua Rae Haddock, 20, each pleaded guilty to nine counts of entering auto in Forsyth County Superior Court. Judge David Dickinson sentenced the two under a negotiated plea Friday.

The terms also require each man to complete 300 hours of community service in the first year, have no contact with the victims or co-defendants and follow all typical terms of probation.

Together, they must also pay $3,215 in restitution for the items taken from vehicles.

The sentence was allowed under the First Offender Act, which gives the men the ability to have the record sealed from their criminal history after they successfully complete probation.

Austin and Haddock were initially charged with 22 and 21 counts, respectively, for the vehicles entered in summer 2011.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after several items reported stolen turned up at a local sporting goods store.

The investigation led to the arrests of Austin, Haddock and Mitchell Gutierrez in October 2011.

Gutierrez, 19, was charged with one count of entering auto and one count of theft by receiving stolen property. His case has not entered the court system.

Residents reported vehicles being entered on four dates in 2011: July 31 in the Riverstone subdivision; Aug. 21 and Sept. 3 in the Green Summers subdivision; and Aug. 21 in the Lake Astoria neighborhood.

Targeted vehicles had been left unlocked, with valuables in plain view, according to the sheriff’s office.
