The Forsyth County Extension Service had another successful canning and baking competition at the Cumming Country Fair & Festival, with 86 canned items and 109 baked goods entered.

The winners were revealed at an awards ceremony Oct. 3, during which a crowd of about 170 cheered on the participants as they collected their ribbons.

For the first time, the extension service gave away $25 cash prizes to the “best in show” baked good in each of the three age divisions.

Tonia Nieman’s apple pie, Brooke Tate’s lemon bars, and Katherine Barrett’s pumpkin cake roll claimed top honors in the adult, teen, and youth divisions, respectively.

The third annual tasting session followed the ceremony. For $1, fair-goers were able to sample two homemade goodies.

The array of canned goods remains on display at extension’s booth space at the fair, which ends today.
