West plays host to region one-act

Competition is on Saturday

POSTED: October 18, 2013 12:11 a.m.

The title of the show is under wraps, but West Forsyth High School drama director Eric Gray said his students have got a serious contender for the region title.

“We’re doing a musical and it’s a good one,” he said. “I think the show is great.”

The mystery musical will be one of eight performances Saturday during the Region 6-AAAAAA one-act competition at West.

It’s the school’s third year as host, though Gray thinks it may be the last for a while.

“I think three years is all they’re going to let me do it,” he said. “But everybody loves it when we host it.”

In addition to West, Lambert, North and South Forsyth high schools will take part, as will Alpharetta, Centennial, Chattahoochee and Johns Creek high schools from neighboring Fulton County. The winner will advance to the state event.

While it may seem West has an advantage as host, Gray said all of the schools will “bring in a big group. We won’t have any more people than anybody else.”

“It’s usually a full house, but the nice thing is that everybody is supporting everybody,” he said. “Everybody comes in and we just love seeing good theater.

“We like watching all the shows because a lot of us really don’t get to see our peers, since we’re all doing the same thing at the same time, so the one-act [event] lets us see what they’re doing.”

The competition, which is free and open to the public, begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the final performance set for 5 p.m. at West, 4155 Drew Road.
