Electronics recycling set for this weekend

POSTED: October 24, 2013 12:24 a.m.

The twice-annual electronics recycling event organized by Keep Forsyth County Beautiful returns Saturday.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., items ranging from laptops, computers and stereos to CD players, cell phones and microwaves can be dropped off at the Cumming Fairgrounds Parking Lot 3.

Tammy Wright, environmental program manager for KFCB, said there is a $5 charge per carload of items, and an additional $10 fee for each TV.

The money from TV deposits goes to Atlanta Recycling Solutions, the Forsyth-based company that collects the recycling. Wright said TVs are costly to recycle.

“There’s not a lot of value in it,” she said. “That $5 donation goes to KFCB ... a lot of people really seem to appreciate what we do.”

The event draws between 250 and 300 cars each time, though Wright noted that the organization also offers year-round electronics recycling at its Tolbert Street location.

The recycling events, she said are “just something a lot of people know about and they call us a couple of months in advance and say, “When is it coming up?’ Because they know it’s in the fall.

“A lot of people like the atmosphere of just coming in and driving through and having people help them unload it. There are some people that specifically wait for the event, and even after I tell them we offer it at the Tolbert Street location, they still wait.”

Some items will not be accepted at the event, including wooden console and projector TVs, toaster ovens and refrigerators.

“We are very proud to offer this event to the community,” Wright said. “By recycling their old electronics, residents can remove unwanted items from their home while also making a difference in our environment.”
