Contest promotes teen driver safety

Five local high schools in hunt

POSTED: October 25, 2013 5:00 p.m.

There’s still time to vote for any of five high schools in Forsyth County in the Celebrate My Drive contest, sponsored by State Farm.

The culmination of the campaign, running concurrently with National Teen Driver Safety Week, challenges students to embrace safe driving.

Forsyth Central, North Forsyth, South Forsyth, West Forsyth and Pinecrest Academy are registered for the national event.

South is in the lead for the county and close to being one of 90 to claim a $25,000 grant. South, which played host to this year’s ghost-out, has been involved in events all week through the school’s DECA program.

Debra Moore, DECA adviser, said the event has a special meaning.

“Two years ago, one of our very own DECA members lost her brother who was texting while driving when he was only 16,” she said. “Realizing automobile accidents are the No. 1 cause of death among teens, we launched an extensive campaign to inform teenagers about the dangers of distracted driving.

“The marketing students have worked diligently for the past two months to plan and execute their safe driving ideas.”

School commitments can be made until 11:59 p.m. Saturday at www.celebratemydrive.com.
