Legislator appointed to committee over GWCC

Panel will monitor new stadium project

POSTED: October 27, 2013 12:20 a.m.

Whether folks love or hate it, the new Atlanta Falcons stadium is going to be built.

While there was controversy over the decision to build the facility, District 24 state Rep. Mark Hamilton said “that decision has already been made.”

The Republican representative from Cumming was recently tapped to have oversight on the project, helping to “ensure the use of public resources is done in the correct manner.”

House Speaker David Ralston recently announced his appointment of Hamilton to serve on the Georgia World Congress Center Authority Overview Committee.

Hamilton joins five House members on the panel, which is responsible for monitoring and reviewing the center’s operations.

“I am honored that Speaker Ralston appointed me,” Hamilton said. “Already one of the top convention centers in the country, this important Georgia authority will also be very busy with the construction of the new stadium. Accordingly, there will be many oversight responsibilities to protect the assets of Georgia’s citizens and I look forward to the challenge.”

Hamilton is filling a seat vacated by former state Rep. Donna Sheldon, who resigned from the legislature. He will be joining representatives Jan Jones, Edward Lindsey, Rahn Mayo, Butch Parrish and Matt Hatchett.
