County selling surplus items

Auction set for Saturday

POSTED: November 1, 2013 12:27 a.m.

A variety of items — including cars, trucks, mowers, electronics and office equipment — will be available during Forsyth County government’s surplus auction on Saturday.

The auction site, 843 Canton Highway in Cumming, will be open for a preview of items from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today and from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, with bidding to follow. The event will take place rain or shine.

“The live auction gives our local taxpayers and other buyers an opportunity to purchase items such as vehicles or office equipment at very reasonable prices,” said Avery Gravitt, the county’s director of fleet services.

The county typically selects items for the surplus auction that are worn out, aged or outdated, Gravitt said. Some of those include furniture, electronics and recreational equipment.

In the case of vehicles or heavy equipment, many have high mileage and “possibly need expensive repairs that would not be cost efficient,” he said.

Gravitt estimated that between 100 and 200 people including area residents and small companies, as well as other governments, attend the annual auction. Evans Auctioneers will run the event again this year for Forsyth.

County commissioners opted to make one change to the auction procedures this year, which will require the buyer to pay the 10 percent premium instead of the county.

The commission voted 5-0 on Sept. 24 to transfer that cost to the buyer, allowing the auction to go on at no cost to the county.

At that work session, Chairman Pete Amos said that it was his experience the buyer typically pays the premium.

Potential buyers must obtain a bidder’s number in order to participate in the auction. Acceptable methods of payment are cash, credit card (a 3 percent processing fee will apply), cashier’s check and personal or company check (with a current bank letter of guarantee).

Full payment must be made on the day of the auction and items should be removed from the auction site the day of the event, unless other arrangements are made.

Gates will close at 4 p.m. All items are sold as is, with no warranties or guarantees. For more information, go online at www.weaci.com or www.forsythco.com.
