The members of Forsyth County’s state legislative delegation had heavy hearts Wednesday after losing one of their own.

State Rep. Calvin Hill, a Republican whose District 22 included the southwest corner of Forsyth, as well as parts of Cherokee and Fulton counties, died at age 66.

“Calvin Hill was a great representative and even a better man,” said District 25 state Rep. Mike Dudgeon of south Forsyth. “In my freshman term, I learned a lot about how to be a respectful and effective representative by watching him in the House. We will all miss him and my prayers go out to his family.”

Hill, who had served two terms as mayor of Ball Ground in the early 1990s, was first elected to the House in 2002. During his service, he maintained membership to various civic clubs, many of which he presided over, including the Canton Rotary Club, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, March of Dimes and Cherokee Outdoor YMCA.

He served as chairman of the House Code Revision Committee, as well as the Appropriations, Banks & Banking, Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Special Rules, State Properties and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.

A former Marine, Hill and wife Cheryl had lived in Georgia since 1986. He is survived by five sons, a daughter and three grandchildren.

Both Dudgeon and fellow Republican District 24 state Rep. Mark Hamilton said they learned about Hill’s Leukemia diagnosis in the summer.

Hamilton said he was saddened to learn of “the passing of my good friend.”

“I have been a Cherokee or Forsyth county delegation member with Calvin over the last seven years. During this time it has been an honor to praise him for his honesty, ethical behavior, and love for God and family,” Hamilton said.

“Calvin was also a great legislator and successful business owner. His wife, Cheryl, was constantly at his side in all personal, business and political events. I hope and pray for peace for the family as they deal with this untimely death. He will be missed greatly.”
